I haven’t cried next to my dad in a long time, but I had no other response in those moments when Christian Eriksen was on the ground. Only numbness and fear.

My dad seemed surprised when he saw my tears. He put his arm around me and we watched for a while in silence. After we learned that Christian Eriksen had been stabilized, a better mood returned. My dad brought me a beer:

“Are you ok?”
“Think so.”

I always imagine events like the Euros as times where you put your arms around people in joy and humour and release. I’ve never imagined this. I don’t think anyone else has, either. It’s a good reminder. Put your arm around someone. Let them know you’re there.

You forget that Italy’s national anthem is crazy long. I timed it: 1m 32 seconds. Don’t discount how long that is. This tune has like, movements in it. And probably a lot of sentiment packed in there, too.
