Last week, Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani was fined 100,000 squid and suspended three games for using a racially sensitive term in a social media post.
The post came after United’s 3-2 turnaround win against Southampton in November, where Cavani netted the injury time winner. In response to a friend's post-match congratulatory message, Cavani used the phrase ‘Gracias Negrito’.
Two things to note here:
Cavani deserves to be fined
Social media is the worst
To the latter point, social media is the undoing of too many at-least-65%-well-meaning people. To the former, Cavani is in trouble less for his choice of words than for lacking the wherewithal to see and understand the social media shit sandwich being prepared and brought to his table, which again speaks to point #2. Particularly right at this moment. Why? Maybe Milwall. Maybe John Barnes. Maybe Luis Suarez.
